SACHIKO
This solo was commissioned and performed in partnership with the city of Colmar's esteemed Musée Unterlinden and Ballet du Rhin. The idea for this solo began with an exploration and curiosity of a garment's role in a sacred ritual. Inspired by the rich drapery depicted in Musée Unterlinden's medieval collection, Brett creates a conversation between Western religious vestments and an Eastern tradition—performing with a kimono inherited from her late grandmother, Sachiko.
In this deeply personal work, performed in the museum's garden stone corridor, the kimono becomes both partner and portal, its 70-year old silk holding decades of family history. As her first self-performed solo, SACHIKO allowed Brett to examine how ceremonial garments across cultures prepare us to receive something beyond ourselves. The piece celebrates Brett's Japanese heritage while exploring the bridge between remembrance and ritual, the tangible and the intangible.
