BACKGROUND
Training and Career
Brett was born in Tokyo, Japan but grew up in the USA. She began her formal training at the School of American Ballet in New York City, where she had the unique opportunity of performing many child roles with New York City Ballet. Despite this dominance of Balanchine technique in her youth, Brett went on to supplement this training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington DC, where she graduated her Vaganova exams with high marks and a new style in her pocket. Subsequently, she moved cross country with a scholarship to the San Francisco Ballet School where she landed her first contract as a Trainee with San Francisco Ballet. After completing the Trainee program, Brett's professional career began at Boston Ballet, where she spent six years in the Corps de Ballet with varied featured roles in the company's diverse repertoire. Seeking to diversify her widespread North American dance background, Brett took a career turn and joined the Ballet de L'Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, France. Currently dancing her seventh season with Ballet du Rhin, Brett continues to expand her knowledge of the European contemporary dance scene.
Brett's roots as a choreographer grew from Ballet du Rhin's mainly creation based repertoire, where her initial choreographic stunts were cultivated in her collaborative offerings in the creation of original roles. Her creative skills developed further while directing part of Ballet du Rhin's digital season during the pandemic, and her passion for social relevancy was voiced while participating in the company's outreach collaboration in support of Mulhouse's LGBTQ+ community. After these early projects, Brett finally created her first mainstage solo Anonym as part of the company's 2021 season. Anonym sparked critic's attention for it's unqiue theatrical nature and went on to be performed at various museums around Alsace, notably the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar. Having proved her emerging choreographic talents, director Bruno Bouché commissioned Brett for a creation as part of the 2023/2024 season at the Strasbourg Opéra House. This creation titled, Muse Paradox, garnered critical acclaim across France, winning La Plume D'Or from the dance media publication Danses avec La Plume and even lead Brett to a feature in Pointe Magazine. Most recently the work has granted her a coveted spot as one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" for 2025.
PROCESS
Goals and Style
Brett is a classically trained dancer and emerging choreographer with a passion for creating meaningful, message-driven dance. Her unique perspective blends American ballet precision with European contemporary flair, offering a fresh take on neoclassical ballet. As a woman who's spent over a decade in the Corps de Ballet, she understands collaboration, harmony, and teamwork in way that makes her process in the studio democratically unifying and communicative. She believes creative energy flows best when the studio is a safe space for every dancer to voice their opinions regardless of the company's hierarchy. With this, her work aims to challenge classical ballet's legacy while remaining accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences. By blending classical techniques with modern perspectives, she strives to create performances that resonate on both artistic and social levels. She is hopeful that ballet will continue to evolve with the world we live in, and she strives to help this evolution by reimagining traditional narratives with social relevancy and voicing her own unique critical perspective.

As an Asian American artist, Brett is committed to fostering diversity and representation in ballet and she is proud to have been featured in Phil Chan's "Final Bow for Yellowface" platform, addressing cultural sensitivity in dance. Additionally, she's had the honor of speaking about her experiences as a female choreographer at the esteemed Théâtre de La Ville in Paris, advocating for greater inclusion and equality in the field. Brett is eager to bring her innovative choreographic vision to new projects, collaborating with forward-thinking companies and institutions to create transformative dance experiences that challenge, inspire, and unite.
